# All roads lead to Rome

After 12 years we were back in Rome. We'd been invited for an autumn visit we couldn't turn down — a long weekend (public holiday), a short honeymoon ahead of us.

Since museums in the city are free on the last Sunday of the month, we wanted to visit the Sistine Chapel. Even though we got there early, we didn't make it in. The queue at the entrance stretched all the way to St. Peter's Square. The queue to enter the square itself was also substantial. Unlike the airport, they had a problem with a glass bottle — so they left it there. We did get into the basilica and saw what we could. We continued through the historic centre. Unfortunately we fared similarly at the Pantheon — queue across the entire piazza. The nail in the coffin on the first day was the Trevi Fountain. The place was so packed you could barely see it. This was exactly the spot where you could see how much Rome has changed over the years. How much tourism has changed. How the internet (Instagram) has changed tourism.

Despite all of that, we thoroughly enjoyed it — excellent food and drink, wonderful weather. What more could you want. The amount of rubbish did catch us off guard unpleasantly — it's everywhere, unfortunately, on every corner. It wasn't smelly, but it's not a pretty sight.
