The benefits of a password manager for the company and the employee

I started a new job and the first thing I asked the IT department about was a password manager. Is there a recommended one, an approved one, can I use my personal one, what's the policy? I got an answer — we have an approved solution: 1Password. Now that's what I call an employee benefit!

It works pretty simply: you register through the portal, your company admin approves you, and at that point you're entitled to a free family account (up to 5 family members). That's an invaluable perk. And here are the actual benefits.

You don't mix apples and oranges — company credentials are stored in the work vault. Personal stuff is in your personal vault. Access to the work vault is managed by your employer; your own vault you manage yourself. It's just linked to the work account, and if you leave the job your account becomes independent and you carry on as normal. Another benefit is simply that the employee has a password manager. You're encouraging best practices outside of work too, which matters for building good habits. And last but not least it says something about a company that's aware of the dangers of poor password hygiene and the risks that come with it, and actively works to prevent them.
