when you can't see a damn thing and still have to defend yourself

As part of training I experienced what it's like to face an attacker under difficult lighting conditions. In a word — awful! Everything happens much faster. Almost instantly. By the time you spot the attack — you're already feeling the pain from the hit. Blocking the first strike under poor conditions is very hard. It takes training, training, training, and luck.
