With the 2011/2012 timetable I lost the long-distance connection on the Ostrava–Valašské Meziříčí–Kroměříž–Brno route

It used to be a fairly busy service, mainly with students. It only ran on Sundays and public holidays. The Ministry of Transport communicated the following:

Based on very limited public budget options, the Ministry of Transport had to reduce long-distance services for the 2011/2012 timetable period, including train R 1444/1445. The main reason for this decision was that this pair of express services was not operated as part of a long-distance line, which affected the operating costs — which were significantly higher than for trains running at regular intervals and thus forming long-distance lines.

Today, the public got access to the breakdown of state subsidies for express train routes in 2010. Among the data was the route mentioned in the Ministry's justification — trains running at regular intervals forming long-distance lines on the Bohumín–Přerov–Brno route. The loss per kilometre comes to 111.2 CZK (the whole route is 180 km, i.e. 20,016 CZK). For the entire year 2010 the total loss amounts to 197.9 million CZK. If I take that literally, then R 1444/1445 must have cost more than 197.9 million CZK — and it only ran on Sundays and public holidays. The train had four second-class-only carriages. Something doesn't add up here…
