Stone vs. concrete

After moving in, we wanted to get settled, which meant drilling a few holes for wall plugs. Drilling in an unfamiliar flat is always a lottery — you never know what's under the plaster. I have a Bosch impact cordless drill that comes supplied with what look like masonry bits. Or so I thought — wrong. They're stone bits. How did I find out?

The first two or three centimetres went fairly well, then progress stopped completely. Not a budge. The bit was taking a real beating, not to mention the drill. I didn't waste any time and started researching. I found out that the bits that come with my drill are very likely stone bits (CYL-1). What I actually needed were concrete bits (CYL-5).

What a difference! The bit dug in beautifully and everything went smoothly. So don't be fooled by the bits that came in your drill set looking like concrete bits… when they're not.
