Tea with milk, "with pleasure, sir," and the Queen — from these clues it's pretty obvious where I was.

Arrival

The journey to London was slightly nerve-wracking — just a few days earlier the Paris attacks had happened… Armed patrols were everywhere. At Heathrow I finally understood why my photo is stored in my passport — you just insert it into the reader, smile, and Welcome to the UK!

Atmosphere

On the first evening we wanted to explore London. Countless places were lit up in the colours of the tricolore. Candles were burning in many spots… the atmosphere wasn't gloomy, but you could feel people expressing their support for the people of Paris. Even with everything happening in the world, the English remain polite and friendly.

Food

Black tea with milk — how I'd missed it. Can't say the same about the lunchtime classic of toast, though I don't turn my nose up at it either. And of course, Fish & Chips.

About London

There are so many places you have to see: Tower Bridge, the London Eye, Buckingham Palace… Imperial War Museum London was my main goal. We unfortunately didn't have time for Duxford. We spent the maximum possible time at the IWM. Lots of fascinating exhibits — I'll highlight the sections on the Cold War, the fight against the IRA, and modern conflicts (the Gulf War, the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq). The Lord Ashcroft Gallery, dedicated to extraordinary heroes, was also very inspiring…
