Or: why they're so annoying

Every second Tuesday of the month Microsoft releases updates for its products. Imagine my surprise when after the mandatory restart I had to restart again! I can't get my head around why twice. If it were system files I'd understand, but a .NET Framework and IE update I'd classify as ordinary system components. Comparing the situation to Linux, where a restart is only required for a kernel update — I can't recall it being needed anywhere else. It strikes me as quite comical. I can think of plenty of questions... but no sensible answers.
