My first visit to this aviation celebration

Something always got in the way and I could never make it to Pardubice. This year I managed it — I bought an electronic ticket (a great idea from the organisers) and headed off. By the way, if you get one of the pricier ticket options you'll be looked after royally and contribute to a good cause. I love that kind of initiative.

The apron was typically busy by Czech standards. Worth singling out were the historical replicas and the aerobatic specials of Martin Šonka and Petr Kopfstein. Outside the main apron stood a Spitfire — for good reason, it was part of an RAF diorama. Twice a day a mission briefing took place there.

The flying displays offered the classics. Perhaps I should add that the performances were longer than is usual at airshows. Particularly fascinating were those linked to events on the ground. WWII scenes — when you see what's happening on the ground, with smoke in the air... and you hear the distinctive whine of the Merlin engine (P-51 Mustang) — it's quite an experience.

The main draw though was the Red Bull Air Race demo. Everyone was looking forward to it, especially since just a few days earlier Red Bull had announced the end of the world series after this season. It's a shame the airport layout doesn't offer more options for the course, because this one was short and fairly straight. Still, it was brilliant.

If I can make it next year I'll definitely go — it's worth it. Plus it'll be the anniversary 30th edition.
