I got the chance to take a safe climbing and belaying course. I have some experience with bouldering. Whenever I climbed on a rope before I'd always just clip a carabiner and skip tying in, let alone belaying. So I welcomed this opportunity. I was issued a harness, climbing shoes, and a belay device. We learned how to tie in correctly (figure-eight knot). That was followed by a thorough double check. Next came an introduction to the basics of belaying, how to sit in the harness, and the first successful ascent of the full wall height. Then more climbing and rappelling under supervision.
