I switched phones

I had to decide whether to wait for the iPhone 13 or swap my iPhone 8 for a 12 straight away. Since the 13 was quite hard to come by, I went ahead with the swap. Thanks to iCloud backup it's fairly painless — but there's a catch with apps that manage the second factor, especially the Microsoft one. It does support backup, but you have to do it through a personal account! Not exactly ideal, but unfortunately the only option.

While installing the same apps on the new phone, you're working on the backup on the old phone so it can be transferred. The two most important steps are knowing and remembering your Apple ID password and access to your password manager. After that everything falls into place.

The big change for me is Face ID — you have to actually look at the phone and aim it at your face. Can't just pick it up and have it unlock. A respirator is a problem. That said, it's quite pleasant and simple to use in its own way. Another challenge is the gestures. Unlike the 8, newer Apple phones use slightly different gestures. If you use both a new and an older model, it gets a bit confusing.

The funniest thing to close with — if you use Siri, try saying: "Hey Siri, Lumos!" Harry Potter fans will probably guess what happens. "Nox" works too.

From iPhone 8 to iPhone 16

My iPhone lost OS update support a while back... then in November I got a notification from 1Password saying that version 8.12 would be the last update for my version of iOS — decision made. Time for a new phone. I'll try the migration.
