How I came to own an Apple phone

I would have considered it impossible before. And yet it happened — I bought an iPhone. What led me there? Updates and the slowdown of my Android. When Motorola released the Moto E 2nd gen they guaranteed an update to the next version. Which meant going from 5.0 to 5.1 — cue an outcry. Motorola eventually announced Android 6.0 would be available and that was the end of it. No security updates, nothing. That's problem one. Problem two was a noticeable slowdown of the phone — I don't know what caused it. Even a factory reset didn't help, and when you need to answer a call and the phone isn't responding... that's a problem.

A dilemma arose: buy an Android and hope for updates, or go Apple? On the Android side there wasn't much to choose from — either Android One devices like the Moto G4, Nokia, or Google Pixel. Nokia guarantees updates for 2 years; I don't trust Motorola much anymore. Google? Well for that price I may as well get an iPhone.

If I choose an iPhone I have a guarantee of updates for at least 5 years. Including regular (security) updates throughout the year. The bonus is integration with my MacBook and wireless charging. NFC is useful too, especially once local banks (reportedly by late 2018/early 2019) start working with Apple Pay. The screen size is 4.7", which puts my iPhone among the smaller smartphones.

I should add that it's still an expensive piece of fun.

You'll have to wait

This year Apple introduced a feature where i...
