Settings changed
I updated to the latest iOS. Went through the whole system seeing what's new, checking which app wants to track me — until I got to Podcasts. I don't know where the developers went wrong, but the update changed my settings. Quite radically — it was downloading every podcast. Not just the one latest episode like before, if you had that enabled. All of them. From every podcast I subscribe to. What?!

So you need to dig into settings to find the culprit. Just turn off auto-download for subscribed podcasts. Meanwhile you'll have a ton of downloads queued up, so head to Downloads and delete them one by one. There's a new confirmation step now too — you can't just swipe left and it's gone. You swipe, then confirm. Fun for a whole evening, if you don't catch it in time.
This is exactly the kind of change that made me say "never Apple" in my first year of uni. And here we are again... The golden rule in IT: if it ain't broke, don't fix it. I hope someone in Cupertino got the memo too.
