I got the chance to try a shoot with an FX body.

Specifically a Nikon D610. The first thing that strikes you is the viewfinder — enormous! The controls are equally intuitive, with a few extra settings added. ISO can be pushed to incredible values and the image is still usable. The last thing worth mentioning is the number of focus points. On my D80 I have 11, of which one is cross-type. The D610 has 39, with 9 cross-type. One thing you need to be careful about, especially if you often shoot wide open, is precise focusing. A hair off and the shot goes in the bin. There's no margin for error. That's why you need to monitor your output and work carefully. But the results are worth it. Even with an ordinary AF-D 50mm f/1.8 — a genuinely cheap lens — you can produce a beautiful photo.

I also tried AF Fine Tune on my AF-D 80-200mm f/2.8 ED, unfortunately with less than satisfying results. Even at the maximum setting of -20mm I still wasn't getting focus where I needed it. The back-focus is greater than I thought. Stopping down does reduce it noticeably, though, which is fortunate.

Finally I could use my prime lenses (AF-D 50mm f/1.8; AF-D 85mm f/1.8) to their full potential. It's left me very hungry for more.

I think it's only a matter of time before I buy an FX body.
