A New Year's concert straight from Vienna
The New Year's concert was a bit different this year. Due to renovations at the Janáček Theatre it was held at KC Babylon. The conductor was German Caspar Richer — which was also part of why there was quite a sizeable Austrian contingent in the audience.
Overall it felt like being at a Vienna Philharmonic concert. The programme was built around works by Strauss (Johann — father and son — and Richard), Mahler, Shostakovich, Prokofiev, and others. It all felt pleasantly cohesive. The cherry on top was the encore — the Radetzky March, with the audience clapping along, just as it should be.
