Troopers is a German conference focused on information technology.

It's hosted by a conference centre in Heidelberg, a picturesque German city not far from Mannheim. For the first two days I attended a workshop led by Erik Hjelmvik from NETRESEC — an excellent two days focused on network (forensic) analysis, not only using the tools NetworkMiner and CapLoader. The conference itself offered a large number of talks split across three tracks (Attack & Research, Defense & Management, and SAP). I mostly followed the security track, with occasional detours into the attack and research one.

Outside the conference, attendees could socialise over a Nokia 3310, hack the phone they received (new possibilities!), try hacking BMW systems, and practise lockpicking. The final day of the conference was dedicated to roundtables — we sat around a table and discussed topics together. It was fascinating to hear the perspectives of very different organisations on the same issues.

Some of the ideas were more than thought-provoking.
