From display model to toy
When I bought and built the Lego Tumbler (76240), I thought it was a shame there were no motors and it couldn't be remote-controlled. So I started searching… and found this Lego MOD. Sourcing the parts was a challenge. The biggest headache was the motors and springs (brutally expensive — almost as much as the Tumbler itself). Fortunately after some searching I found reasonably priced ones. I had a bit of a struggle deciding on the controls and went with Buwizz. First I went for v3, but after charging problems I swapped to v2. The lights are from Game of Bricks. To power the lights from the Buwizz you need this adapter PF/PF Connector. The missing bricks are easy to find thanks to the ready-made parts list on Bricklink. Best to buy as many bricks as possible from a single seller and hunt down the rest from others. You can get everything for a fairly reasonable price.
The build itself means taking the Tumbler apart and essentially putting it back together again. In some places I tweaked the instructions to make sure nothing falls off the Tumbler while driving — mainly the outer shields and panels. I also made a complete floor covering. This stiffens the Tumbler and protects the cable runs to the motors (I route them from the batteries down through the frame and to the rear). This solution also lets me drive over various obstacles fairly smoothly without worrying about scraping the underside.
