I won't get into how it's written or what it was supposed to do…

Rather the why behind the problems it's probably causing. DNS — a service the Average Joe has no idea about, yet without which things barely work. And now for what I ran into today: the Ministry has 4 DNS servers and one of them had no record for crv.mdcr.cz. The whole problem came down to blocked zone transfers and a strange DNS update (not incrementing the zone serial number when adding a DNS record).

Hi, can anyone experienced advise me on DNS. Our DNS server occasionally refuses to resolve crv.mdcr.cz to an IP address. When I look at whois e.g.: http://www.who.is/dns/mdcr.cz/ the domain crv.mdcr.cz doesn't appear in the output at all. But when I check via: nslookup crv.mdcr.cz mdcr.mdcr.cz it does resolve the IP address. We have the root servers a.root-servers.net, b.root-servers.net… set in DNS, and unless I also add e.g. resolver1.opendns.com, it doesn't resolve at all. No problems with other domains. What did all this cause? Occasionally you'd type crv.mdcr.cz and wait... What users can't see are the communication problems inside the system. Those communicate similarly and if they can't find out who they should be talking to, it simply fails. And as a bonus on top of all that: probable hosting of the server in standard commercial O2 housing — and a certificate that the browser flags as unsafe when you type in the address.

In the commercial sector something like this would happen once... and then that company would go bankrupt.
