or 14 days by train around the Czech Republic

It all started with an article in the ČD pro Vás magazine. Michaela Bugrisová wrote about how she travelled all regions in 14 days. Which gave me the idea to spend 14 days visiting everywhere I'd always wanted to go...

I have an InKarta, I take the train quite often. So my Summer Ticket was a bit cheaper. I also used a large amount of ČD Bonus points to buy class upgrade supplements to first class for both weeks. Which comes in handy on tropical days and long journeys (air conditioning in 1st class). I only needed two reservations — for the Pendolino to Františkovy Lázně.

I visited a blast furnace (Lower Vítkovice area), a silver mine shaft (St. George's shaft), a car factory (Škoda Mladá Boleslav), aviation museums (Kbely and the Medotěj Vlach Museum), towers (Černá, Bílá věž and the Žižkov TV tower), a hydro power plant (Hučák), a liqueur distillery (Becherovka), a brewery (Budvar), a thermal spring (Vřídlo), memorials, cathedrals, churches, historic centres, urban conservation areas and countless railway stations.

In total I covered more than 4,676 km. The most frequent service was EC 282 Slovenská strela. The most used section was Brno Židenice – Kolín, line 260. The longest delays I experienced were on SC trains (in one case a track-jumper, in the other a points failure at Smíchov) — 36 and 30 minutes! First class also exists on some local trains (Cheb – Karlovy Vary, Pardubice – Hradec Králové). I tried a truly enormous variety of trains: Pendolino, Railjet, InterPanter, RegioPanter, RegioNova, RegioShark, and Czech and Slovak EC and Ex services.

If you wanted to cover my route with standard tickets, budget around 8,200 CZK. With In25 it would come to around 6,200 CZK. With In50 you'd get to a total of around 4,200 CZK.

It was a great ride. I'd do it again next year — there are still plenty of places I haven't been.

It's a disaster between Prague and Brno

I traveled on several trains run by Czech Railways and RegioJet within the same week. The stretch between Svitavy and Brno isn't exactly great for coverage, same goes for the Orlice valley. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.
